As someone who read Earth Abides 20-25 years ago and fondly remembers the book, I was pleasantly surprised to see a series being made. When that happens, there’s always a bit of trepidation because you hope it stays true to the book and lives up to your visual expectations, knowing that it’s hard for a movie or TV series to live up to what you imagined when you read it. – With that in mind, I watched the first episode with a bit of a bias, but trying to see it as a "new" story, as well as a welcome reminder of one of my favorite books in the "Dystopian/Post-Apocalyptic" genre.
There is room for a good pandemic story after Covid
The book is written and takes place in the 1940s, while the series is modern, so the technology and general "feel" of the environment is different from the book. The pace is naturally fast and especially rushed to accommodate character development and the main plot in the first episode of a miniseries. Episode 1 successfully establishes an interesting story that seems to pay homage to Stewart’s theme.
We can’t wait for the rest
It invites both book fans and new viewers to think about humanity’s place in a changed world. So far, the acting is good, the production and effects look decent, maybe a little stingy (you might expect a lot of cars, etc.). "One Hundred Years of Solitude" is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
