My Sad is Sadder than Yours

Anthology 2023

by Ala Ilescu (Author), Donna McCabe (Author), Michaela Malek (Author), Mehran Hashemi (Author), Susannah Lee (Author)

“My sad is sadder than yours” is a collection of artworks by Ala Ilescu. It was inspired by poetry about suffering and healing.

This book was conceived as a work of art. The design and the structure combine watercolor paintings and poetry.

The book was created to communicate a message, to impose reflection on the subject matter.

“My sad is sadder than yours” is about different kind of suffering: mental health struggles, grief, childhood trauma, domestic violence and more.

In order to enjoy life we have to let go of the past. Let the wounds heal. The main message of this book is ” you are not alone, if you relate to any of these struggles, then you can heal too”.

Thunderstroke

Poetical Memoir 2025

by Terence Ang

“Stroke has profoundly altered my relationship with words, presenting both a challenge and a revelation. Aphasia, a condition that affects my ability to process and express language, has become an unexpected teacher on my journey. Once a fluent communicator, I now grapple with finding the right words. This struggle, while deeply frustrating, has also reshaped my understanding of communication, revealing its true essence—the power of words to connect, heal, and inspire.

Amid this journey as a stroke survivor, marked by both darkness and light, despair and hope, I was inspired by the evocative works of Mehran Hashemi (also known as hush m e). His poetry encouraged me to explore the use of poetry as a form through which my emotions could flow unrestrained, capturing life’s complexities in moments of profound brevity. This exploration allowed me to distil my experiences and offer a glimpse into the raw and unfiltered reality of surviving a stroke.

The poems in this book are drawn from A Cry in the Dark, my debut book.
A collaborative work with hush m e, they convey the deep truths of my journey as a stroke survivor. They articulate the mental and emotional battles I faced—the despair of loss, the resilience to endure, and the triumph of rediscovering purpose. Each verse is a beacon, illuminating the path from darkness to light.
I hope these words will resonate with others standing at the precipice of their own transformation. Through this collection, my aim is not only to share my journey but also to offer solace, strength, and a reminder that even in the darkest moments, light is never far away.”
